Drill Usage XR Training
VR for safe, cost-effective high-risk training with ILLUSORR & PRIYME.

The Project
There are about 2.8 million nonfatal workplace accidents and injuries in the United States’ private industry alone each year. Workplace injuries cost the U.S. an estimated $250 billion each year.
In collaboration with ILLUSORR and PRIYME Inc., iiterate Technologies developed a Virtual Reality (VR) training solution for high-risk, hands-on drill usage. This immersive VR application provides blue-collar workers a safe, cost-effective way to train on heavy machinery in simulated environments, addressing workplace injuries and reducing training costs.
VR provides a safe environment for training employees using virtual tools and heavy machinery safely in a simulated workplace context.
The Challenge
Blue-collar industries face high attrition rates and frequent accidents due to insufficient hands-on training in high-risk tasks such as fire safety and power tools handling. The challenge was to:
Minimize injury and equipment damage during training.
Ensure high retention rates for complex skills.
Scale the solution to accommodate large, geographically distributed workforces.
Deliver scalable, hands-on high-risk training with cost efficiency, accessibility, and retention.
The Solution
iiterate developed a high-fidelity, VR drilling simulation for the Oculus Quest 2. This tactile experience places trainees in a virtual workshop where they interact with tools and materials. Advanced features include:
Collision Detection and Pose Analysis for real-time feedback.
Voxel Painting for precise drilling simulation.
Interactive training modules for unsupervised learning.
Cost, Time, and Efficiency
Cost Savings: Reduces the expenses associated with physical drills and in-person training.
Time Efficiency: The scalable VR system enables quick onboarding of large workforces.
Risk Reduction: Eliminates hazards associated with real-life equipment handling.
Design Features
Realistic Simulations: Collision detection, tactile feedback, and visual accuracy replicate real-world conditions.
Modular Training: Step-by-step guidance ensures comprehensive learning, even without supervision.
Performance Testing: Built-in assessment tools provide quantitative reports on trainee progress.
Applications of XR Technology
Workplace Safety Training: VR allows hands-on practice without the physical risks of real-world environments.
Remote Learning: Train employees from anywhere, reducing logistical costs and increasing accessibility.
Higher Retention: Interactive experiences lead to improved engagement and knowledge retention.
